The origins of the Augustinian monastery in Rottenmann are shrouded in mystery, as neither the precise year of its founding nor the original patron are definitively recorded. It is presumed to have been a foundation of the Augustinian order, though it remains unclear whether it was a convent for canons or canonesses. Over the centuries, the monastery experienced various phases of prosperity and decline. The Reformation led to a temporary dissolution, before it was revived during the Counter-Reformation. The secularization under Emperor Joseph II in the late 18th century ultimately sealed the end of monastic life in Rottenmann.

The former monastery is situated in the town of Rottenmann in the Liezen district of Styria. The town is nestled in the Upper Styrian landscape, surrounded by the foothills of the Alps.

Today, parts of the original monastic complex are still preserved and have been converted to secular uses. The former monastery buildings are integrated into the townscape and bear witness to the historical significance of the site.
