Augustinerchorherrenstift St. Peter

The origins of a spiritual community in Waldsee date back to the late 11th century. In 1181, Emperor Frederick I founded the monastery at the parish church of St. Peter. The vogtei (advocacy) over the monastery changed hands over the centuries, first to the Lords of Waldsee in 1282 and then to the Dukes of Austria in 1331. In 1621, the monastery was elevated to an abbey before being dissolved in 1788 at the request of the canons. Originally situated outside the city walls, the monastic precinct was fortified by the 13th century at the latest.

The Augustinian Canons Regular Monastery of St. Peter is located in Bad Waldsee, a town in the Ravensburg district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is situated at the northern corner of the protected old town, within the former city fortifications. The Gut-Beth-Platz adjoins the complex directly to the south.

Of the original three-winged complex that surrounded St. Peter's Church, several buildings remain today. The elongated north and east wings, whose core dates back to the early 17th century and were unified under a common roof in the 18th century, now house a community college, city archive, club rooms, and apartments. The Prelature, a stately three-and-a-half-story building from 1748, marks the transition to the monastic precinct and features rich architectural painting and coats of arms. The tower-like Kornschütte (granary), a four-story solid building from the 17th or 18th century, was converted into a residential building after a fire in 1806. Another Baroque outbuilding, presumably a former economic or administrative building, now also serves as a residence. The former collegiate church is now the Catholic city parish church of St. Peter, a late Gothic basilica built from 1479 to 1483 and baroqueized in 1710. After the collapse of the church tower in 1757, it received its distinctive double-tower facade (1765–1767) and rich Baroque furnishings, including works by Dominikus Zimmermann and Johann Georg Reusch. It also served as a burial site for the Truchsesses of Waldburg.
