Kloster Sankt Zeno Reichenhall

Parish church, secondary school

The former Augustinian Canons Regular Monastery of St. Zeno in Reichenhall, nestled in the picturesque landscape of the Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria, is a historic monastery whose origins date back to the early 9th century. It is considered a significant cultural monument in Germany and bears witness to a long and eventful history as a religious and cultural center of the region.

History+

The beginnings of St. Zeno Monastery are presumed around the year 803, when Archbishop Arno of Salzburg founded a monastic cell. After a period as a collegiate church in the 11th century, it was re-established in 1136 as a monastery of the Augustinian Canons Regular by Archbishop Konrad I of Abensberg. The canons primarily dedicated themselves to pastoral care and, from the 12th century onwards, served numerous parishes in the Reichenhall valley, as well as in Tyrol and Pinzgau. Economically, the monastery long benefited from its own salt pans in the Reichenhall saltworks and a vineyard in the Wachau. During the Baroque era, St. Zeno experienced a flourishing period as a cultural hub, before its dissolution in 1803 as part of secularization. The monastery church became a parish church, and the buildings later came into the possession of the Sisters of Mary Ward.

Location+

The former monastery is located in Bad Reichenhall, a town in the Berchtesgadener Land region in the federal state of Bavaria, Germany.
