Augustinereremitenkloster Pappenheim

The Pappenheim Monastery was founded in 1372. It was dedicated to Saints Spiritus and Augustine and established by Hereditary Marshal Heinrich von Pappenheim and his wife Elisabeth von Ellerbach. The Augustinian Hermits shaped monastic life until its dissolution in 1545. Since then, the entire complex has been owned by the descendants of the founding family. Over the centuries, the monastery church served as a burial place for the Counts of Pappenheim, a tradition that continued after the Reformation and included members of both denominations. From the 17th century onwards, it exclusively became the crypt church for the Marshals of Pappenheim.

The monastery is located in Pappenheim, a town in the district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen in Bavaria, Germany.

The area of the former monastery is designated as an archaeological monument. The monastery church, whose structural fabric dates from the founding period to the 18th century, was rededicated for ecclesiastical use in the 1990s after extensive restoration. It houses an organ built around 1712, which is one of the few original preserved instruments. Today, church services and sacred music events take place there.
