St. Johann Baptist (Memmingen)

The monastery was founded in 1280 by the Memmingen city council. The choir of the first monastery church underwent extensive redesign from 1447, featuring a three-bay rib vault, followed by a renovation of the nave from 1484. In 1498, the Scottish monastery was incorporated into the Augustinian community. After a period of moral decline in the 15th century, the prior and remaining monks were expelled in 1531, with the monastery's furnishings and library sold and its lands confiscated by the city. In 1548, the monks regained their rights and subsequently dedicated themselves to pastoral care in the Catholic surroundings. In 1615, the buildings were renovated, and about a century later, the monastery and church were baroqueized. In 1803, the monastery passed to the Teutonic Order, which ceded it to the Bavarian state in 1805. From 1807, the church served as a Catholic parish church, and by 1843 at the latest, it received the patronage of St. John the Baptist. Between 1850 and 1852, most of the monastery buildings were demolished. An extensive church renovation took place from 1865 to 1867, during which the side vaults were removed. In the early 20th century, the Baroque furnishings were replaced by Neo-Gothic ones, and a final interior redesign occurred in 1961/64.

The monastery is located in the city of Memmingen in Bavarian Upper Swabia.

The former monastery church now serves as the Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist. Inside, it houses numerous wooden sculptures from various eras, including a remarkable figure of Christ with movable arms, believed to have been created around 1500. The current organ was acquired in 1952 and rebuilt in 1960.
