Augustinerinnenkloster Küstelberg

The Augustinian nunnery of Küstelberg was founded shortly before 1177. By 1179, it was already referred to as “Cenobium s[anc]te Marie.” It was likely initially associated with the Meschede convent for noblewomen. From 1220 onwards, the monastery's provost exercised patronage rights over the church in Medebach and, by 1276, influenced the appointment of the parish priest in Winterberg. In 1284, Count Ludwig of Arnsberg gifted the chapel in Glindfeld and its vogtei to the monastery. Five years later, in 1294, Grafschaft Abbey transferred its main estate in Glindfeld to the Augustinian nuns of Küstelberg. In return, the nuns committed to electing their provost from Grafschaft Abbey. By order of Archbishop Wigbold von Holte of Cologne in 1297, the monastery was relocated to Glindfeld, a move completed in 1299 under Provost Gottfried von Padberg. The monastery church, a three-aisled hall, was partially demolished after the relocation and completely in 1741. The monastic buildings fell into disrepair over time, with only ruins remaining by 1802. The monastery was dedicated to Saints Mary and Lawrence.

The former monastery was situated in Küstelberg, a locality within the Hochsauerlandkreis in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Today, only remnants of the original monastic buildings survive. A new church was erected in Küstelberg following the demolition of the monastery church.
