Augustiner Abbey

The Augustinian Monastery in Dillingen an der Donau, Bavaria, was once a significant institution of the Augustinian Hermits. It exemplifies the rich monastic history of the region and today houses various uses.
History+
The foundation of the Augustinian Monastery is documented for the year 1294, although it was first mentioned in a document as early as 1292. The monastery was consecrated in honor of Saint Thomas of Villanova. In 1522, the then prior, Caspar Amman, publicly spread the teachings of Martin Luther, leading to profound changes. The Augustinians ceded their monastery to the city of Lauingen in 1540, after which the Protestant church order was introduced in 1542. Following a period of interruption, the monastery was reoccupied in 1656. On September 1, 1802, as part of the Bavarian secularization, the administration of the monastery was transferred to electoral Bavarian officials. The final dissolution of the monastery occurred on March 20, 1804.
