Augustiner Abbey

The Augustinian Monastery in Würzburg, a historic convent of the Augustinian Order, is located in the city of Würzburg in Bavaria. It is a significant spiritual institution that continues to exist to this day.
History+
The Augustinian Monastery, dedicated to Saint George, was founded in 1262 by Father Guido Salanus. A notable figure in its early history was the Augustinian hermit Heinrich, a physician, whose tombstone was placed in the choir of the then Augustinian church after his death in 1381. During the secularization of 1803, the monastery initially remained in existence, possibly to prevent the transfer of bank assets to Austria. Grand Duke Ferdinand confirmed the monastery's continuation in 1806. In 1813, the monastery building on what is now Augustinerstraße had to be vacated to serve as a hospital and teacher training college. The Augustinians then moved into the former Dominican monastery, which was initially granted to them provisionally and later offered for purchase. After Würzburg became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria, the Augustinian Monastery was eventually dissolved in 1818, and its assets were transferred to the Augustinian Monastery in Münnerstadt. The old Augustinian church was demolished in 1824. An Augustinian hospice, dependent on Münnerstadt, was permitted in 1828 and regained its status as an independent priory in 1847. Between 1958 and 1959, Augustinians took over pastoral care in the parish of St. Bruno in Steinbachtal, where a new Augustinian monastery was established, housing an Eastern Church Institute and an Augustinian Institute.
