The former Augustinian monastery of Königsberg in the Haßberge region of Bavaria was once a significant religious center and today bears witness to a turbulent history closely linked to the Reformation.

History+

The monastery, dedicated to the Holy Mary, was founded in 1363 by Kunigunde von Sternberg, with confirmation from Pope Urban V. As early as 1366, Sophia, the widowed Margravine of Brandenburg, released the convent from all feudal obligations and donated an altar; further support came from Sophia, Countess of Henneberg. The construction of the monastery church was completed in 1391. Nobles from the region, including the Truchsesses of Wetzhausen, supported the monastery with rights and funds, which also enabled the expansion of the church. Heinrich de Augea (Aub) was elected as the first prior in 1368. The monks were involved in pastoral care in the surrounding area. Although the convent embraced strict observance early on, the order's reform movement remained controversial. Martin Luther is said to have visited the monastery in 1518. In 1524, the last prior, Georg Büttner, left the order and became an evangelical pastor. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the already dilapidated monastery was plundered, which prompted many monks to leave. In 1528, the year of its dissolution, Nikolaus Fleischmann was the last resident. The buildings passed to the Lords of Coburg and fell into disrepair; by 1610, the cloister was still recognizable.

Location+

The monastery was located in Königsberg in Bavaria, a municipality in the Haßberge region.
