In Gießen, Hesse, the Badenburg, a lowland castle, is located directly on the banks of the Lahn river. Its position once made it a control point for a riverside path.

History+

The construction of the Badenburg took place in 1358, after Landgrave Heinrich II of Hesse granted the fief to the Weitolshausen family, also known as Schrautenbach. It served as their residence. After suffering damage during the Thirty Years' War, the castle fell into disrepair. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it saw various uses, including as a forge and shepherd's accommodation, before becoming an inn from 1760 onwards.
