Badeschloss Castle

Hotel

The Hotel Badeschloss is a former public spa institution and a former hotel at Straubingerplatz 4 directly next to the Gastein Waterfall in the municipality of Bad Gastein in the district of St. Johann im Pongau in the state of Salzburg. It is a protected monument under 19142! After standing empty for years, the roof structure completely burned out on March 27, 2013, following arson.

The Badeschloss, built elevated with a two-winged staircase, was erected between 1791 and 1794 according to plans by Wolfgang Hagenauer on behalf of the Salzburg Prince-Archbishop Colloredo. The classicist serpentine portal was created in 1794 based on a design by Anton Högl. In 1807, the castle was converted into a public spa house. In 1857, the building was demolished up to the first floor and rebuilt. German Emperor Wilhelm I first stayed here in 1863 and then came annually, with an interruption in 1866, until 1887 for his summer spa stays. From 1912, it was a military spa house before being converted into a hotel in the 1920s.

After its use, it stood empty for several decades and had been owned since 1999 by the Viennese real estate investor Franz Duval, who let it fall into disrepair. On March 27, 2013, the roof structure was consumed by flames; according to the police, the cause was arson.

Architecture and Features+

The building is a four-story and seven-axis structure on a rectangular floor plan. The portal is decorated with borders and pilasters. Above it is an inscription tablet from 1794. A commercial premise is housed in the symmetrical double staircase leading to the Badeschloss, which was integrated in 1924/25 according to plans by Hans Prutscher.
