Ballea Castle
This tower house on a cliff above the Owenboy River was probably built by the FitzGeralds in 1439. Evidence suggests that it was remodelled in the early 17c as a three storey L-plan stronghouse. Occupied by the MacCarthys until the late 17c, it was in ruins by 1750 when it was restored by the Hodder family. It would appear to have undergone a modern restoration, and is now private residential accommodation.
