Ballyloughan Castle, a ruin in County Carlow, is an example of medieval architecture in Ireland. Significant parts of the former fortress remain today.
History+
The construction of Ballyloughan Castle is believed to date back to the 13th century. Originally, the complex featured a courtyard protected by a curtain wall and an outer moat. The castle changed hands multiple times. Initially, it was owned by the Kavanagh family before passing to the Bagenal family, who also gave their name to the nearby town of Bagenalstown. In the early 19th century, the castle was finally acquired by the Bruen family.

The ruin of Ballyloughan Castle is located near Bagenalstown in County Carlow, within the Leinster region of Ireland. It stands at an elevation of approximately 95 meters above sea level.

A small square tower has been preserved, along with the entrance gate, which is flanked by two large, rounded towers. The ruin is accessible for visits.
