The construction of Ballymoon Castle is attributed to the 13th century. Members of the Bigod family, who played a role in the region during that period, are presumed to be the builders. Although the exact circumstances of its construction and the history of the castle are not fully documented, the walls survive.

The ruin of Ballymoon Castle is located in the Irish County Carlow (Cheatharlach), about three kilometers east of Muine Bheag. It lies in the province of Leinster (Laighin) at an elevation of approximately 109 meters above sea level.
