History+
The origins of Balmoral Castle date back to the 14th century, when it was built as the estate of Sir William Drummond. Previously, King Robert II used the area as a hunting ground. The estate, which was originally much smaller than the current complex, changed hands several times. In the mid-19th century, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert rented the castle as a holiday home. Prince Albert acquired the estate. By 1856, renovations and expansions were carried out in the Scottish style, primarily using granite as building material.
