The ruin of Balquhain Castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, once served as the ancestral seat of the Leslies of Balquhain and is now a protected monument.

History+

The origins of Balquhain Castle date back to the 14th century, with the Leslie family owning the estate from 1340. In 1441, a contract was made with masons to complete the construction of the castle. The fortress was plundered in 1526 during a feud with the Forbes family but was rebuilt four years later. Mary I, Queen of Scots, stayed here in 1562 during the Battle of Corrichie. The castle's demise came in 1746 when it was burned down by the troops of the Duke of Cumberland and subsequently abandoned.
