Bamberg Cathedral
Bamberg Cathedral of St. Peter and St. George is an impressive Romanesque sacred building that, with its four distinctive towers, shapes the cityscape of Bamberg's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It houses unique treasures such as the Bamberg Rider, the tomb of the only canonized imperial couple of the Holy Roman Empire, and the only papal tomb north of the Alps.
History+
Settlement on the Cathedral Hill began around 600 AD, and the Babenburg was first mentioned in 902. Emperor Henry II laid the foundation stone for the first cathedral in 1004, and Bamberg became a bishopric in 1007. The first cathedral was consecrated in 1012, commemorated with a 1000-year celebration in 2012. After a major fire in 1081 and a provisional reconstruction in 1087, another large fire in 1185 completely destroyed the building. The current cathedral was consecrated again in 1237, and its 750th anniversary was celebrated in 1989. In 1803, secularization occurred, before Bamberg became an archdiocese in 1818. King Ludwig I initiated a stylistic purification from 1829, and in 1923, Pope Pius XI bestowed the title of Basilica minor upon the cathedral.
