Bambergische Castle

The origins of the complex lie in the 13th and 14th centuries when the Diocese of Bamberg, which had acquired lands in Carinthia in the 12th century, had a stately building erected here as its administrative seat. No traces of this first structure are visible today. At the beginning of the 15th century, the complex consisted of a two-story residential tower, first mentioned in a document in 1422, which now forms the north wing. In 1434, ownership passed to the Ungnad family, who fortified and expanded the castle in view of the Turkish threat. From this period date the multi-story tower in the southeast, the eastern and southeastern enclosing wall, the southeastern round tower, and the three-story central tower on the south side.
