Barfüßerkloster Osnabrück

Residential and commercial building

The Barfüßerkloster in Osnabrück was once a significant Franciscan institution in Lower Saxony. Although the original buildings no longer stand, remaining wall fragments and unearthed foundations bear witness to its historical presence. It was situated on the southern edge of the old town and influenced the city's religious and later educational life for centuries.

History+

The monastery was founded by the Franciscan order, a mendicant order, in the 13th century, with construction continuing into the 14th century. During the Reformation in the 16th century, the monastery was dissolved. After the monks departed, an evangelical council school, considered a precursor to today's Ratsgymnasium, was established in the former monastery buildings around 1543. However, this school existed for only a few years, closing again in 1548. Between 1628 and 1634, Franciscan Observants used the complex once more. In 1681, the entire monastery complex, including the church, was demolished. A fragment of the southern enclosure wall, made of quarry stone and featuring a Gothic portal, survived and is now a protected monument. During demolition work in 2023, the monastery's foundations were rediscovered and documented.
