Barony Rosendal

History+
The origins of the Barony Rosendal date back to 1658, when the Hatteberg estate was given as a wedding gift to Karen Mowat, then Norway's wealthiest heiress, and Ludvig Rosenkrantz. The main building was completed by 1665. In 1678, King Christian V of Denmark-Norway officially elevated the estate to a barony. Since 1927, the historic property has been owned by the University of Oslo.

The Barony Rosendal is situated at an elevation of approximately 52 meters above sea level in the village of Rosendal, which belongs to the Westland (Vestlandet) region in Norwegian Hordaland. The estate is picturesquely nestled between the mountains Melderskin and Malmangernuten.

Today, the Barony Rosendal serves as a museum and is accessible to visitors. Among the notable exhibits are the Pompeii Room with impressions of ancient friezes, as well as the Yellow Room in Norwegian Empire style. Also on display are a double axe and armor attributed to Magnus VII Eriksson, along with an extensive collection of coins and securities. The complex features a Renaissance garden, now planted with roses, which seamlessly transitions into a romantic landscape garden from the mid-19th century.
