Barrière de l’Esseillon-Fort Marie-Christine
The Barrière de l’Esseillon-Fort Marie-Christine fortress is located at approximately 1480 meters above sea level in the commune of Aussois, in the French department of Savoie within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. As part of the Barrière de l’Esseillon defense line, it is currently used as a youth hostel.
History+
Fort Marie-Christine was constructed in the 19th century under the reign of Victor Emmanuel I. The fortress was part of a defense system, the Barrière de l’Esseillon, which served to protect the Kingdom of Sardinia. It was named after Maria Christina of Savoy. The fort was never involved in military conflicts. After the annexation of Savoy to France in 1860, the fort was preserved and continued to be used by the French army, instead of being destroyed like other installations.
