In County Cork in the south of Ireland is Barryscourt Castle. The ruin is a historic site.

History+

The origins of Barryscourt Castle date back to the 12th century when the de Barry family began its construction. Although the de Barrys owned various lands in County Cork, which were divided among their family branches, Barryscourt Castle always remained in the possession of the most influential branch, the Barrymores. After the Barrymore line died out, ownership passed in 1566 to James FitzRichard of the Barryroes, a distant cousin from the Barryscourt line. In 1617, the castle was finally abandoned as the de Barry family residence.
