The Basilica of Pliska is a significant sacred building in Bulgaria, which once served as a cathedral, archiepiscopal palace, and monastery. Located in the Shumen region, it bears witness to the early Christian architecture of the First Bulgarian Empire.
History+
Around the year 875, the Basilica of Pliska emerged as an impressive architectural complex. With a floor area of 2,920 square meters, it was considered the largest Christian cathedral in medieval Southeast Europe, outside of Constantinople. It was a central place of worship and administration in Pliska, the first capital of the First Bulgarian Empire, which existed from the 7th to the 9th century.
