Basilika St. Lambert, Bechtheim

Dedicated to Saint Lambert of Liège, the church originally belonged to the Diocese of Liège, which held the right to appoint canons to the parish in Bechtheim. This practice continued until the Reformation. The considerable size of the basilica suggests its former function as a pilgrimage church, as it is located on a historic pilgrimage route between Speyer, Worms, and Bingen. The foundational structure from the first half of the 11th century was a three-aisled Romanesque pillar basilica with five arcades and a flat ceiling, its eastern choir elevated by six steps above the nave. Around the mid-12th century, a second construction period saw a new choir added to the old one, with its orientation differing from that of the main nave. The sides of the original choir were pierced with arcades, transforming the former apse arch into a triumphal arch. Concurrently, the nave walls were raised, the side aisles extended, and new windows were installed. Around 1200, the exterior walls of the nave and choir were redesigned with arcaded friezes and pilaster strips. The square tower, positioned to the west, was built in the first half of the 12th century, and its porch was vaulted in the mid-12th century. In 1570, the tower underwent partial renovation. From approximately 1700, the basilica served as a simultaneous church for both Lutheran and Roman Catholic believers, separated by a large iron grille, until the simultaneum ended in 1910.

Today, the basilica is used by the Roman Catholic community and is a protected cultural monument. A mechanical swallow's nest organ, installed in 1979, is located in the nave. In the so-called tunnel crypt beneath the altar area, remnants of Gothic wall paintings are preserved. Originally, the church stood within a fortified cemetery, forming a church fortress; fragments of the fortifications and Baroque tombstones are still present.
