Basilica of St. Lawrence

Archaeological excavations between 1960 and 1966 uncovered the remains of Roman walls, including a Roman house from the 2nd century AD. An early Christian church was built over it in the 4th or 5th century. This was followed by several alterations and extensions until the present Gothic church was constructed around 1300. The site is associated with Saint Florian of Lorch and the Martyrs of Lorch, whose relics are interred in the main altar. Saint Severinus of Noricum also worked here. The basilica was once the seat of the Diocese of Lauriacum and in 791, Charlemagne observed a three-day fast here before a campaign.
