Basilica of St. Martin, Bingen (Rhine)

Early evidence of Christian life in Bingen dates back to the 5th and 6th centuries, as shown by the tombstone of the priest Aetherius. Archaeological discoveries in the crypt, including a fragment of an ancient altar, suggest the possible presence of a Roman temple on the same site, although this cannot be definitively proven. The first written mention, indicating a connection to an institution dedicated to Saint Martin, dates to 793. The first definite proof of the current church's existence comes from a document by Archbishop Willigis of Mainz from 1006, which refers to the collegiate church of St. Martin in Bingen. The crypt from the mid-11th century is the oldest surviving part of the early Romanesque basilica. Following a devastating city fire in 1403, which destroyed the existing church building, the basilica was rebuilt in Gothic style and consecrated in 1416, incorporating the old crypt. In 1819, the collegiate buildings were demolished. Extensive restorations in the 19th century added chapels, a sacristy, and tracery galleries. Pope Pius XI elevated the church to a minor basilica in 1930. After severe damage in World War II, reconstruction was completed by 1958. In 2006, the 1000th anniversary of the church's mention was celebrated.
