Begerburg Castle

As early as the 18th century, Carl Siegmund von Nimptsch, owner of the Roßthal manor, had a pleasure house named Carlsburg built on a rocky outcrop known as “Kanapee.” A storm destroyed the wooden structure in 1742, which was then replaced by a stone building. This fell victim to the turmoil of the Battle of Kesselsdorf in 1745. After another destruction during the Seven Years' War in 1759, a viewpoint with a rotunda and benches was created on the site. In 1852, quarry owner Johann Gottlieb Beger acquired the property and commissioned Theodor Lehnert to build a neo-Gothic villa incorporating elements of a medieval castle. The building initially served as a restaurant with several dining rooms, a hall, a coffee lounge, and an observation deck. The interior design also featured a medieval style, partly with wood imitations.
