Belvedere Castle
The Belvedereschlössl presumably dates back to the 15th century. Its ownership is traceable from the 17th century, when it belonged to Count Andreas von Volkra, from 1672 to Count Palffy, and from 1688 to Albrecht von Albrechtsburg. From 1690, it was owned by the Freysegg family, who used it as a pleasure palace and sold it to the market town of Stockerau in 1780. In 1882, the Weipert machine factory was built in the garden of the Belvedereschlössl, and demolished again in 1933. Afterwards, the area was partially developed, but in 1984 it was redesigned as a baroque garden. Under Mayor Leopold Richentzky, extensive revitalization measures for the small palace also began in 1984.
In 1985, the Belvedereschlössl Cultural Center was opened. The collections of the Stockerau Museum, which had been housed in the town hall since 1910 and later in the church school, could thus be moved into the new premises.
Museum+
The Stockerau District Museum in the Belvedereschlössl features collections in the fields of paleontology, prehistory, mineralogy, numismatics, natural history, ecclesiastical art, weapons and military history, as well as objects from the past of the city of Stockerau. A memorial corner is dedicated to the writer Nikolaus Lenau. Furthermore, annually changing special exhibitions take place. The museum, open on Sundays and public holidays, bears the "Austrian Museum Seal of Approval", which was confirmed in 2010.
Particularly noteworthy objects:
- Prehistoric and early historical collection: Finds from Großmugl – including the Moon Idol from around 500 BC.
- Significant holdings of ancient coins; coin finds from Höbersdorf, 17th century.
- Former high altar painting of the parish church, St. Stephen, signed Nikolaus van Hoy, 1666.
Further Cultural Events+
The Belvedereschlössl also hosts readings, concerts, and exhibitions by visual artists. The newspaper "Unsere Stadt" regularly reports on these events.
