Bemelberger Castle

The Schlössle is located in the western area of the old town (Bemelbergergasse 1 and 3) and borders the former city wall and moat on its western side.

The Schlössle was newly built around 1564/65 (dendrochronological dating) by Konrad von Bem(m)elberg the Elder (Southern German name form of the Boyneburgers), by combining several bourgeois properties. In its original form, it was a Renaissance palace, elongated, with originally two stories. The building consists of three zones. The western zone was later rebuilt so that a third story could be added. The ground floor in all three zones originally had a "compressed" lunette vault; it only remained in the middle zone. The annex on the south wall is interpreted by historical building researchers as a chapel. According to the building survey of 1783 (see weblinks), it was in any case the staircase. The middle zone may have been used for utility rooms at the time of construction. The kitchen was in the vault of the western zone. In 1783, the building had three stories throughout, with the kitchen now on the first floor of the west zone. The increasing utilization of living space is due to the fact that eventually in the 18th century, three residential parties inhabited the house. Although the building does not have the dimensions of a real castle, it was completely sufficient for Konrad von Bemelberg as a retirement residence. Konrad von Bemelberg the Elder also preferred this residence to the city palace Ehingen and the (probably uninhabitable) Schelklingen Castle, which also belonged to his pledge. In 1567, Konrad von Bemelberg the Elder died in his Schlössle, already two years after its completion.
