Bemelberger Castle

The Bemelberger Schlössle refers to the urban residence of the mercenary leader and pledge holder of the lordships of Ehingen, Schelklingen, and Berg, Konrad von Boyneburg, in the town of Schelklingen in the Alb-Donau-Kreis in Baden-Württemberg.

The Schlössle is located in the western part of the old town and borders the former city wall and moat on its western exterior.

The Schlössle was newly built around 1550 by Konrad von Bem(m)elberg the Elder (South German form of the Boyneburg name), by combining several bourgeois properties. In its original form, it was a Renaissance manor house, elongated, with three stories. The stair tower was added to the exterior of the south wall. Parts of the ground floor are cross-vaulted and were probably formerly horse stables. Other utility rooms were also located on the ground floor. The first and second floors were living quarters with a kitchen.

Although the building does not have the dimensions of a true castle, in the 16th century it was sufficient for the comfortable living of a baron, which is why Konrad von Bemelberg the Elder preferred this residence to the city castle of Ehingen and Schelklingen Castle. In 1567, Konrad von Bemelberg the Elder died in his Schlössle. After his father's death, his son Konrad von Bemelberg the Younger had the pledge lordship terminated by Austria. He subsequently acquired the lordship of Hohenburg-Bissingen in 1568, whereupon the von Bemelbergs left Schelklingen and sold the Schlössle.

In the 19th century, a covered walkway on free posts was added to the north side of the Schlössle on the first and second floors to provide access to the rooms from that side. The stair tower was converted into a chapel.
