History+

The origins of Neuburg Abbey date back to the early 12th century, when a castle complex laid the foundation for a monastic settlement. Initially without a fixed monastic rule, the monastery became part of the Benedictine Order around 1165 after it came into the possession of Lorsch Abbey. At the end of the 12th century, it was converted into a Benedictine nunnery. Over the centuries, its affiliation changed several times, including to the Cistercians, before returning to the Benedictines around 1460. The Reformation led to the dissolution of the nunnery in 1562. After various secular and spiritual uses, including as a Jesuit and later Lazarist monastery, the complex passed into private ownership in 1804. It was not until 1926 that the Benedictines returned and established the abbey that exists today.

Neuburg Abbey is situated in the Ziegelhausen district of Heidelberg, on the southern slope of the Köpfel mountain, above the northern bank of the Neckar river. The Mausbach stream flows into the Neckar in the immediate vicinity of the monastery.
