St. Matthias' Abbey

Monastery (active), pilgrimage site

The Benedictine Abbey of St. Eucharius-St. Matthias in Trier, Rhineland-Palatinate, is a historic monastery featuring a Romanesque basilica that serves as a significant pilgrimage site. It houses the only apostle's tomb north of the Alps and is dedicated to Saint Matthias.

History+

The abbey's origins trace back to the 5th century when Bishop Cyrillus commissioned a burial site for the Trier bishops Eucharius and Valerius. Around 977, the monks adopted the Rule of Saint Benedict. In 1127, during construction work, human remains were discovered and identified as relics of the Apostle Matthias. This led to a renaming of the abbey, originally dedicated to St. Eucharius, and attracted large numbers of pilgrims following the consecration of the new, still unfinished church by Pope Eugen III in 1148. The abbey joined the Bursfelde Congregation in 1458. Despite wars and conflicts, the Reformation had no major impact. In 1802, the monastery was dissolved as part of the secularization. Its acquisition by a merchant saved the complex from demolition.

Location+

The monastery is situated in Trier, a city in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 138 m above sea level.

On site+

After several attempts at revival in the 19th century, the abbey was reconsecrated in 1922 and reoccupied by Benedictine monks of the Beuron Congregation. During World War II, the convent was dissolved by the Nazi government in 1941 but returned in 1945. The church has held the title of a Basilica minor since 1920 and remains an important pilgrimage destination.
