Kloster Blankenau

The Blankenau convent was founded in 1265 by Knight Hermann von Schlitz, known as Blankenwald, and his wife Agnes. This act served as restitution after Prince-Abbot Bertho II had the feared Blankenwald Castle razed the previous year. The founders' daughter, Lukardis, was intended to join the convent, and the convent church was designated as their final resting place. Materials from the destroyed castle were utilized for the construction of the convent, located south of the present-day church. The first abbess, Bertradis, was a sister of Fulda's Prince-Abbot Bertho II. Initially populated by nuns from the Benedictine convent of Cruceburg, up to 32 nuns lived there according to the reformed Rule of Saint Benedict. By 1331, Cistercian nuns had already settled the convent. Throughout its history, the convent faced several setbacks, including devastation by supporters of King Ludwig the Bavarian in 1327, a plague epidemic in 1438 that claimed the lives of 33 nuns, and destruction during the Peasants' War in 1525, after which it was rebuilt only in 1620. The convent was dissolved in 1802.

The Blankenau convent is located in the municipality of Hosenfeld, within the Fulda district in East Hesse, Germany.

The former convent church now serves as a filial church of the Holy Cross parish in the Neuhof-Großenlüder deanery of the Diocese of Fulda.
