Kloster Cornberg

The origins of Cornberg Abbey date back to the period between 1292 and 1296, when it was founded. It emerged from a beguinage in Bubenbach, which had submitted to the Benedictine Abbey of Hersfeld in 1230. Following a donation in 1277 and the consent of the heirs in 1292, construction of the new monastery complex on the Corenberg could begin. The convent was moved from Bubenbach to the new location in December 1295. The monastery church was consecrated to the Mother of God Mary, the Apostle Simon, the Apostle Judas, Saint Wigbert, and Saint Nicholas. Until its dissolution during the Reformation in 1533, the monastery served as a spiritual center before being converted into an agricultural estate.

The former Cornberg Abbey is located in Hesse, Germany, at an altitude of approximately 276 meters above sea level. It is nestled in the landscape of the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district.

Today, the Benedictine convent of Cornberg is protected as a cultural monument. The complex, once a place of contemplation and prayer, no longer serves its original purpose but preserves its historical significance.
