Benediktinerinnenkloster Guben

The establishment of the convent is presumed to have occurred in the second half of the 12th century, though an exact year remains uncertain. Its first documented mention dates back to 1319. The nuns adhered to the Benedictine Rule, and the convent was dedicated to Saints Mary and Mauritius. In 1429, the convent suffered destruction during the Hussite invasion but was subsequently rebuilt. From 1498 onwards, parts of the convent's property were progressively mortgaged by the sovereign. The Reformation, introduced in Guben from 1523, initially had little impact on the convent's existence. The convent was eventually dissolved and secularized in 1563, following the death of the last abbess.

The convent was situated west of the Neisse river, opposite the town of Guben, and belonged to the March of Lusatia throughout its entire existence. The area is now known as Klostervorstadt.

Today, only minor remnants of the original convent walls remain. The current convent church is a new construction from the 19th century. After its secularization, the Guben Salt Office was established on the premises, taking over the landholdings.
