Klosterkirche St. Georg und Pancratius

Protestant parish church, event venue

The former Benedictine convent of Hecklingen, a significant cultural monument in Saxony-Anhalt, is located in the Salzlandkreis and represents an outstanding example of Romanesque architecture. It is one of the important stops on the Romanesque Road and impresses with its rich history and unique art treasures.

History+

The origins of the monastery date back to before 1118, when it was founded as a Benedictine abbey for women in Kakelingen. The founders were the Lords of Kakelingen, and the first nuns came from the Gerbstedt monastery. It served as a burial place for the founding families and later for the Counts of Plötzkau and the Konradsburgers. From 1147, the monastery was under the Vogtland of the Ascanians. Between 1150 and 1176, construction of the impressive monastery church began. At the end of the 13th century, the Benedictine nuns adopted the Augustinian Rule, transforming the monastery into an Augustinian canonesses' collegiate church. After 1319, the princes of Anhalt took over the Vogtland rights. A fire in 1496 destroyed parts of the complex but spared the church. In 1559, in the course of the Reformation, the monastery was secularized, converted into a manor, and later expanded into a castle. The monastery church became the Protestant parish church of Hecklingen.

On site+

The former monastery church is now used as a Protestant parish church and also serves as a venue for concerts. It houses Romanesque stucco sculptures of European importance, including an angel cycle from around 1225/30 and five founder heads from the 12th century. After extensive restorations in the 19th century and between 1992 and 1996, the church presents itself in its Neo-Romanesque interior design.
