Benediktinerinnenkloster Hemmingstedt

The convent of Hemmingstedt was founded in 1502, following the Dithmarschers' victory in the Battle of Hemmingstedt. It was dedicated to the Mother of God, Mary, and intended to house Benedictine nuns. The official confirmation of the convent's foundation by a papal legate occurred in 1503, placing the nuns under the Benedictine Rule. Despite the initial endowment and the dramatic origin story, no sustainable spiritual life developed. As early as 1513, the foundation was converted into a Franciscan monastery and relocated to Lunden. The final dissolution of the convent was confirmed in 1517 by Pope Leo X. The unfinished buildings were subsequently demolished.

The former convent was located in Hemmingstedt, a municipality in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

Today, no independent buildings of the original Benedictine convent remain. Only the spacious choir of Hemmingstedt's St. Mary's Church, which once served as a place of prayer for the nuns, still bears witness to the existence of this short-lived convent.
