Benediktinerinnenkloster Heusdorf

The Heusdorf convent was founded in 1123. According to legend, Benedictine monks experienced a miracle of Mary near a nearby chapel, which led to the establishment of the convent. Through generous donations, including those from the Lords of Isserstedt and the Schenken and Vitzthume of Apolda, the convent evolved into an influential landlord in the region. During the Reformation, the complex was secularized in 1536 and transformed into the territorial office of Heusdorf, with its administration housed in the former convent buildings. Between 1736 and 1739, architect Gottfried Heinrich Krohne planned to convert the administrative seat into a three-wing complex, which involved demolishing parts of the convent buildings. Later plans in the 1680s to transform the estate into a pleasure palace were not realized. In 1845, large sections of the complex were demolished for the construction of the Thuringian Railway. After 1945, the remaining buildings were significantly altered or completely removed.

The former Heusdorf convent is situated in the Heusdorf district of the town of Apolda, nestled within the landscape of the Weimarer Land in Thuringia, Germany.

Today, only a few former outbuildings of the original convent remain. The complex has been significantly altered over the centuries through renovations, demolitions, and new constructions.
