Benediktinerinnenkloster Himmelau (bei Gelnhausen)

The nunnery was founded in 1313 by Siegfried von Gelnhausen, Bishop of Chur, who hailed from a prominent Gelnhausen family. Initially confirmed by Emperor Henry VII as Kloster Ubenhausen, it became known as Himmelau from 1319 and was managed as a Cistercian convent from 1323. The convent was dedicated to Saints Lucius and Florinus. In 1537, the institution was dissolved, though the nuns were permitted to remain on site. When, in 1561, only the abbess and two other nuns inhabited the convent, it was finally abandoned. The buildings passed into the possession of the city in 1562 and were demolished in 1777. Today, only a small fountain house remains of the former complex, and street names such as Himmelauer Straße and Am Kloster commemorate the former convent.

The Himmelau convent was situated in the Main-Kinzig region of Hesse, Germany, near the town of Gelnhausen.

Of the original convent complex, only a small fountain house remains today, which is privately owned. The former convent buildings were completely dismantled in the 18th century.
