Benediktinerinnenkloster Neuburg an der Donau

The exact founding period of the convent is not certain, but the year 1002 is traditionally cited as the founding date. Emperor Henry II and his consort Kunigunde are considered the founders due to their endowments. In 1007, Henry transferred the convent, along with the nearby Benedictine convent of Bergen, to the Diocese of Bamberg, which he had founded. Both convents were dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and John the Evangelist. Around 1168, at the request of Emperor Frederick I, Admont Abbey sent nuns to Neuburg to carry out a reform, with Agnes von Dießen-Wolfratshausen becoming abbess. After 1180, the Vogtship passed from Bamberg to the Wittelsbachs, and from 1247, the Neuburg office, the town, and the convent's Vogtship were in the hands of the Bavarian dukes. The convent subsequently maintained close ties with the House of Wittelsbach. A convent fire in 1463 destroyed many documents, after which Abbess Barbara Brunner initiated a reform of the convent. Around 1500, the community comprised almost 40 nuns. From 1510 to 1521, Margarete von Bayern led the convent as abbess. With the introduction of the Reformation by Count Palatine Ottheinrich in 1542, the convent was dissolved. The last abbess, Magdalena Hundt von Lauterbach, passed away, and the administrator Barbara Ringhammer left the convent permanently with the remaining sisters in 1584. A Jesuit college was established on the site of the convent in 1622, after the Jesuits had been brought to the city by Duke Wolfgang Wilhelm in 1613/14. Following the suppression of the Jesuit order in 1773, the property fell to Elector Karl Theodor, who established the Grand Bailiwick of Neuburg of the Grand Priory of Bavaria of the Knights of Malta here in 1782. The Maltese Bailiwick was dissolved in 1808 as part of the secularization.

The former Benedictine convent is situated in Neuburg an der Donau, a town in the district of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen in Bavaria, Germany. It is located in the upper, walled part of the city, near the present-day Hofkirche.

Since 1847, the building has been used as the Maria-Ward-Institut (English Ladies) and houses a Realschule.
