The Benedictine Monastery of Osnabrück is an active religious institution located in the city of Osnabrück, Lower Saxony. It houses a community of Benedictine nuns dedicated to the Most Holy Sacrament and is known for its long history, marked by foundations, exile, and reconstruction.
History+
The monastery's origins trace back to a community founded in Saint-Omer, France, in 1841. In 1854, at the invitation of Osnabrück's Auxiliary Bishop Carl Anton Lüpke, a branch of the Benedictine Sisters of the Most Holy Sacrament was established in Osnabrück, elevated to a priory five years later. Between 1854 and 1865, the sisters operated a girls' school, which was even visited by King George V of Hanover. In 1869, the monastery settled in the medieval Neu-Helfta monastery in Eisleben. However, the Kulturkampf forced both monasteries to emigrate to Oldenzaal in the Netherlands in 1875, where a new monastery existed until 1967. After the end of the Kulturkampf, part of the convent returned to Osnabrück and built a new monastery on the site of the former Nobbenburg, which was occupied in 1899 and expanded in 1910. During World War II, the monastery was severely damaged by bombing between 1942 and 1944, rendering it uninhabitable, but it was rebuilt thanks to the support of Bishop Wilhelm Berning and Chaplain Helmut Hermann Wittler.
