Benediktinerinnenkloster Osterholz-Scharmbeck

The monastery was founded in 1182. Initially conceived as a double monastery for men and women, it was exclusively inhabited by nuns from 1202 onwards. The monastery suffered a fire in 1345, from which only the monastery church survived and was subsequently rebuilt. In the course of the Reformation from 1522, there was a coexistence of Protestant and Catholic nuns. After being plundered during the Thirty Years' War, the monastery was dissolved by the Swedish administration in 1650. The remaining nuns were granted lifelong residency rights and a pension.

The Osterholz-Scharmbeck monastery is located in the town of Osterholz-Scharmbeck in the federal state of Lower Saxony, Germany.

The historic monastery complex is currently used as a church and community center. The monastery church of St. Marien and other buildings such as the hospital and the monastery guesthouse from 1562 are preserved. Parts of the monastery wall from the 12th century are also still visible. The buildings are listed as historical monuments.
