Kloster Rohr

In the 9th century, a Carolingian St. Michael's Church was built near Meiningen and used for monastic purposes, but this first Benedictine monastery existed for only about a century. The church itself, however, has been preserved. Towards the end of the 12th century, a new monastery for Benedictine nuns was founded about one kilometer southeast of the village of Rohr. A document from 1206 first mentions it when Berthold von Meiningen and his brothers transferred the vogtei to the monastery. Through donations and acquisitions, including lands in Diemershain (1269), parts of Dillstädt (1271), and Wichtshausen (1275), the monastic property grew. With the introduction of the Reformation in the County of Henneberg in 1544, the monastery was secularized and dissolved under Count Georg Ernst von Henneberg. In its place, the current St. John's Church was built in the 17th century. The monastic archive, comprising nearly 100 medieval documents, was long thought lost but was rediscovered, and its contents were processed in a 2006 publication.

Kloster Rohr is situated in Thuringia, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 332 meters above sea level.

Today, the complex is a cultural monument in Thuringia. The original St. Michael's Church from the 9th century is preserved to this day, while the St. John's Church was built in the 17th century on the site of the Benedictine nunnery.
