Benediktinerinnenkloster Rolandswerth/Nonnenwerth, Remagen

The foundation of the monastery took place in 1112, when the first Benedictine nuns settled at this site. Over centuries, the convent developed into a significant spiritual center in the region. The community of nuns shaped religious and cultural life until secularization at the beginning of the 19th century led to the dissolution of the monastic structures. Despite this break, the place remained known as Nonnenwerth and later found a new purpose.

Nonnenwerth Abbey is located on an island in the Rhine, nestled in the picturesque landscape of the Ahrweiler district in Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany. Its geographical position within the river lends the ensemble a special isolation and scenic beauty.

Today, the complex houses a gymnasium, which fills the historic buildings with new life. The original monastic architecture remains visible and bears witness to the long history of the place, even though its use is different from the time of the Benedictine nuns.
