The first documentary mention of Walsdorf Abbey dates back to 1156. It was founded as a convent of Benedictine nuns and was dedicated to Saint Mary. For several centuries, it shaped the religious and cultural life of the region. In 1634, the monastery was dissolved as part of the secularization, thus ending its long history as a spiritual institution.
