Protestant Lutheran parish church
Benedictine Abbey of Abdinghof, Paderborn

The former Benedictine monastery of Abdinghof in Paderborn, North Rhine-Westphalia, is a significant example of Romanesque architecture and a protected historical monument. The complex, which today houses an Evangelical-Lutheran parish church, looks back on a long and eventful history closely linked to the development of the city of Paderborn.
History+
The Abdinghof monastery was founded in 1015 by Bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn, who also initiated the construction of the abbey church. However, archaeological findings suggest that the actual construction of the monastery only began in the late 11th century. Bishop Meinwerk was, according to his wishes, buried in the crypt of the Abdinghof church after his death in 1036, before his sarcophagus was later transferred to the Busdorf Church. Throughout its existence, the monastery suffered several destructions by city fires, including in 1058 and 1165, each followed by reconstruction. Over the centuries, the Benedictine monastery developed into a cultural center with an extensive library, a school, a hospice, and a workshop for book illumination and bookbinding. It also owned extensive land. In 1803, the Abdinghof monastery was secularized and thus dissolved.
