The foundation of Aura Monastery took place in 1108 at the behest of Bishop Otto I of Bamberg, with the aim of strengthening Bamberg's rule along the Franconian Saale. The first monks who settled here came from Hirsau Abbey. The historian Ekkehard von Aura served as the first abbot. In 1167, the patronage over the monastery passed to the Counts of Henneberg. In the 14th century, Aura transferred from the Diocese of Bamberg to the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg and later, around 1469, joined the Bursfelde Reform movement. Around 1500, the monastery possessed extensive property and rights in several bailiwicks and tithe courts. Its decline began in 1525 with the German Peasants' War and the Reformation. The complex suffered severe damage during the Second Margrave War in 1552/53. In 1564, Bishop Friedrich von Wirsberg dissolved the monastery as a spiritual institution, and its assets were assigned to the Trimberg office of the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg.

The monastery is situated in Bad Kissingen, a town in Bavaria, Germany. It is located at an elevation of approximately 235 meters above sea level.

Today, the monastery complex is a registered architectural monument. Parts of the former cloister are still present, although the north wing was demolished and the other wings were significantly altered. The chapter house and the apostles' hall in the east wing now serve as a mortuary and for exhibitions, respectively. A Renaissance portal adorns the northwest side of the west wing, and a much-altered southern gatehouse likely dates from the 13th century.
