Bürgel Abbey

The former Benedictine monastery of Bürgel, located in the Thalbürgel district of the town of Bürgel in Thuringia, is a significant cultural monument. The preserved Romanesque monastery church of St. Mary and St. George is one of the outstanding sacred buildings in the region and houses the remains of the only Benedictine stepped choir in Germany.
History+
The monastery of Bürgel was founded in 1133. As a Benedictine abbey, it was consecrated under the patronage of Saints Mary and George. The monastic community existed until its dissolution and secularization in 1526. Over the centuries, the complex developed into an important economic center in the region.
Location+
The remains of the monastery are situated in the village of Thalbürgel, approximately 13 kilometers east of Jena, on an elevated position above the Gleise river. The former monastery is located at an altitude of approximately 229 meters above sea level.

Today, the former tithe barn and the Romanesque abbey church are preserved and restored. The tithe barn now houses a museum. The church serves the Protestant parish for worship services and is also a venue for art exhibitions and concerts, known for its excellent acoustics.
