Parish church

The former Benedictine monastery of Chammünster, located in the Bavarian city of Cham, represents a significant historical testimony of the region. As an early missionary cell, it played a central role in the Christianization of the Bavarian Forest and Bohemia.

History+

The foundation of Chammünster Monastery is dated to the year 701, established by Benedictine monks. It quickly gained supra-regional importance, particularly through its missionary activities. However, in the early 10th century, during the so-called Hungarian incursions, the monastery met its demise. A later refoundation as a collegiate church in 1016 under Emperor Henry II is handed down as a legend. After the dissolution of the monastery, the minster became the seat of the Cham deanery and served as the mother parish for 35 communities.
