The foundation of Oldisleben Monastery is dated to around 1085. It was inhabited by monks of the Benedictine order and was dedicated to Saint Vitus. For centuries, the monastery shaped the spiritual and cultural life of its surroundings. In the course of the Reformation, Oldisleben Monastery was dissolved and secularized in 1539, bringing an end to its existence as a spiritual community.
