Prüll Charterhouse

In 997, Bishop Gebhard I of Regensburg founded the monastery of Prüll as a Benedictine monastery, dedicated to Saint Vitus. It was intended to take over the functions of the monastery of St. Emmeram, which had previously become independent, and served as a guesthouse for travelers and a hospital for the poor. Originally conceived as a double monastery for monks and nuns, it experienced a decline around 1100 and was restored under Bishop Hartwig I. In the mid-15th century, the monastery fell into financial difficulties under Abbot Christoph Welser, despite the construction of the octagonal towers still visible today. This led to the abandonment of the guesthouse operation in 1451. In 1484, with ducal consent, it was converted into a Carthusian charterhouse, henceforth known as Karthaus Prüll.

The Prüll monastery is situated within the city of Regensburg in Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 365 meters above sea level.

The Romanesque monastery church of St. Vitus is protected as an architectural monument. After secularization in 1803 and its sale to the Bavarian district of Oberpfalz in 1835, the buildings served as an asylum for mentally ill persons. After the Second World War, the institution developed into the Bezirksklinikum Regensburg and today houses the university clinics for psychiatry and psychotherapy as well as for neurology.
